Rythms in Rotterdam

Coolsingel, one of the main roads of Rotterdam

Rythms in architecture are normally seen in the repetition of certain elements, such as windows, columns, doors, arcs, among others. I found nice buildings that not only have an specific rythm in their architecture, but also add some rythm to the city. From the gallery below, the left-top photo is the Markthall building, by MVRDV. Here you can see the repetition of the windows in the facade. The right-top photo shows the reflection of the city-scapes in a glass building. The left-bottom photo shows the Groot Handelsgebouw, a 65 year old building considered a dutch monument shows not only the repetition of the facade elements, but also in the roof, the furniture seem to be simetrically organized. It is, in my opinion, a beautiful example of rythm and symetry in architecture. In the right-bottom photo you can see the repetition of sloped roofs that highlight from the context.

In the next set of photos, you can see a more diverse rythm, created not only by one building, but by the composition of different ones. Traditional sloped roofs in contrast to contemporary architecture; or reflections of the city that give a certain sense of continuity in all dimensions. You can also see different hights on the same plane and different periods reflected in the constructions that rise in the horizon.

It is an interesting excercise to find patterns and ryhtms in the city, please comment if you want to share the rythms of your city!
